A young hockey player from Port Washington has joined the ranks of national champions this spring.

Sloan Sullivan, a sophomore at Shattuck-St. Mary’s School in Faribault, Minn., helped lead her girls’ 16-and-under  team to first place at the USA Hockey National Championships in San Jose, Calif., on April 8.

A starting defenseman, Sullivan co-captained a squad that rallied to defeat defending champion Assabet Valley (Mass.), 4-3, in the Tier-I title game. On the way to the final, Shattuck-St. Mary’s outscored its opponents, 23-1, in pool play and won two elimination games.

Shattuck-St. Mary’s trailed, 3-2, in the title game before scoring two third-period goals.

Sullivan, who attended kindergarten through eighth grade in the Port Washington-Saukville School District, started playing hockey at age 9. She has played on AAA girls’ teams during the regular season and in summer leagues and was chosen to attend national camps.

While attending a summer camp in New York before her freshman year, Sullivan’s play caught the eye of the girls’ hockey director at Shattuck-St. Mary’s.

Sullivan was asked to attend the school, which has become known for its development of collegiate and Junior League hockey players.

She is the daughter of Mike Sullivan and the granddaughter of Paul and Claire Sullivan, all of Port Washington.

Sloan has a brother Cameron and and sister Cassidy who also live in Port.
