Saukville angler lands top prize with lake trout in Port Lions’ annual Lake Michigan fishing derby
Tom Sanden reeled in the top award in the Port Washington Lions Club’s annual Lake Michigan fish derby last weekend.
Sanden, a Saukville resident, won the grand prize of $1,500 in a drawing between anglers who had the first-place catches in each of five categories.
He won the lake-trout category with a catch that weighed 14.7 pounds.
The top finishers by category follow.
Chinook salmon — First place, Dennis Bartelt, Grafton, 20.2 pounds; second, Ryan Barsch, Port Washington, 19.9; 3, Jordan Schwanz, Port Washington, 19.5; fourth, Leroy Sydow, Columbus, 18.8.
Coho salmon — First, Jeff Visser, Waupun, 7.2; second, Bryan Johnson, West Bend, 6.9; third, Mark Kleppin, Jackson, 6.3; fourth, Dan Kropidlowski, Cedarburg, 6.3.
Brown trout — First, Ken Schlosser, Mequon, 14.9; second, Jerry Booth, Mazomanie, 12.0; third, Larry Lorenz, Port Washington, 11.1; fourth, Joe Kaberleton, Germantown, 8.2.
Lake trout — First, Tom Sanden, Saukville, 14.7; second, Jeff Watzlawick, West Bend, 13.3; third, Chad Andree, Port Washington, 11.9; fourth, Mark Kleppin, Jackson, 10.7.
Rainbow trout — First, Jeff Siira, Oak Creek, 9.7; second, Jim Brooks, Fredonia, 8.4; third, Mark Arle, Port Washington, 8.2; fourth, Ken Carter, Mazomanie, 7.5.
In each category, $300 was awarded to the first-place finisher, followed by $200 for second, $100 for third and $50 for fourth.
A total of 199 anglers entered this year’s derby, which was held Saturday and Sunday. The event is part of the club’s annual Lionsfest celebration.
