A late rally carried Homestead past Grafton, 4-3, in a North Shore Conference softball game Monday.

Grafton took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, but the host Highlanders scored two runs to prevail in an early season showdown between two of the league’s title favorites.

The Black Hawks, who fell to 3-1 in the conference and 4-1 overall, went toe to toe with the defending NSC champion. After both teams scored twice in the first inning, Grafton took a 3-2 lead with a run in the third.

The game developed into a pitchers’ duel between the Hawks’ Aly Bartel and Homestead’s Rachel Behnken, who both went the distance.

Bartel allowed five hits and struck out four batters. Behnken gave up six hits, struck out six and walked one.

Homestead improved to 4-0 in league play and took over sole possession of first place.
