McElligott leads way as Black Hawks make their mark at annual West Relays
Sprinting success made a trip to Madison worthwhile for the Grafton boys’ track and field team last Saturday.
Led by Willie McElligott, the Black Hawks won one race and placed second in three other Class B events at the annual Madison West Relays.
Grafton’s victory came from the 400-meter relay team of McElligott, Ryan Grange, Justin Tomashek and Marcus Hill, which was clocked in 46.03 seconds.
McElligott took second in the 200 dash (23.5), as did the 1,600 relay team of McElligott, Grange, Hill and Tomashek (3:35.41) and junior Jason Zahn in the shot put (52 feet, 3
Placing sixth for the Hawks was the 3,200 relay team of Tomashek, Steven Duarte, Matt Salm and Chris Rose (8:41.44).
“We only took a few guys to the meet, and they did very well,” Grafton coach Kevin Kriegel said.
“It was a good chance for us to go up against some bigger teams and see how we could do.”
The Black Hawks finished sixth in the 21-team Class B standings with 37 points.
Tomah placed first with 89.5 points, and Catholic Memorial was second with 54.
Among other Grafton athletes, Chris Rose took 10th in the 800 run (2:11.42), and Hill was 14th in the 55 dash (7.0).
The Hawks were without one of their top sprinters, sophomore Zach DeBuhr.
