The new year brings a new billing service for the Saukville ambulance, and a new fee schedule, which was approved by the Village Board Tuesday.

In September, trustees approved switching ambulance billing to the Milwaukee-based EMS Medical Billing Associates. That change went into effect Jan. 1.

The change was made from LifeQuest, which the village had been using to process ambulance billing, because EMS Medical would keep significantly less of the money collected.

In its bid, EMS Medical specified it would keep 8% of the net payments received, 33% of payments from external collections and 17% of funds collected through the Tax Refund Intercept Program.

For a decade, LifeQuest had been retaining 15% of base billing, and as much as 45% of funds taken in by collection efforts. The company reduced its charges after a competing bid was received for the service.

After winning the village’s billing contract, EMS Medical recommended an updated rate schedule, based on fees used by surrounding ambulance services.

Ambulance Chief Shari Kirsch told trustees the fee schedule is similar to what has been used, with the addition of a new service category.

A charge was created in cases where a paramedic intercept is required. That advanced-care service is now provided through the Port Washington and Thiensville ambulances.

The charge would be $750 for residents, and $825 for non-residents.

According to the rate schedule, the charge for advanced-care calls handled by the local ambulance service would remain at $600 for residents and $675 for non-residents.

A new billing category — basic life-support calls without transport — would also be created. That cost would be $525 for residents and $575 for non-residents.

The mileage charge for transports increases to $15 a mile, which Kirsch said is comparable to what other departments charge. The current schedule charges $13 a mile for residents, and $14 a mile for non-residents.
