Neighbors in village, town say racing traffic poses safety hazard

Neighbors who live on or near Hillcrest Road have petitioned the Saukville Town Board to reduce the speed limit.

“It is like drag racing on the road now. Some kid is going to get hit,” town resident Ryan Wiza said.

Hillcrest Road links the rural countryside to the village’s west side, with the speed limit dropping from an unposted limit of 55 mph to 25 mph as it enters the village near Highway 33.

Village resident Paul Dudzek presented town supervisors with a petition signed by 10 area residents, asking that the speed be reduced to 35 mph in the transition zone from town to village.

Dudzek said the speeding occurs at all hours of the day, primarily by traffic coming from the west.

The neighbors said cars have reached speeds as fast as 100 mph as they race through the rural area.

“People have told me they hope the road never gets fixed, because it would just encourage more people to speed,” Dudzek said.

He said he has also approached village officials about the speed limit, but has gotten no assurances.

“I don’t want this to become a town vs. village issue. We just want to make the road safer for everyone,” Dudzek said.

Town officials said they would consider the speed limit request at a future meeting.

The issue will be brought to the village’s Public Safety Committee on Thursday, Aug. 8.
