Maintenance needs continue to stretch well beyond limited budget

Town of Saukville officials began doling out money for road projects at their last Town Board meeting, but readily admitted their needs stretch far beyond their spending ability.

Officials recently took a three-hour tour of the township, creating a running tally of the condition of all town roads. The town has $40,000 in its budget for road maintenance.

The top priority for roadwork was given to Meadowlark Road west of Highway 57, which was earmarked for milling and pulverizing by a county Highway Department crew.

That work is expected to cost $7,500.

Town Chairman Barb Jobs said pulverizing the existing pavement won’t resolve problems with the road, but it will provide a good base for future work.

The board then went through the itemized list of town roads, noting the areas of greatest concern.

Town supervisors agreed to give their primary attention to roads in need of kettle patching and pothole repair.

Patching was authorized for Hickory, Singing Hill, Blue Goose, Northwoods and St. Finbar’s roads and Woodview Lane.

Spot shoulder work on washed-out areas was also authorized on Deerfield Road and River Hills Court.

“I think this is something we need to do so they don’t go any further backward,” Jobs said.

Officials estimated the cost of that work, which will be done by the county, at about $8,000.

For the balance of the road budget, the town will investigate whether hiring a private contractor will be more cost effective.

Because Jobs was recently elected to the Ozaukee County Board and appointed to the Public Works Committee which oversees the Highway Department, she asked Supr. Curt Rutkowski to take the lead in getting input from contractors.

The Town Board is also scheduled to meet for a special session at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 7, to discuss options for improvements to Blueberry Road.
