Port committee says facility off Hwy. 33 is well suited to serve residents of all ages

The Aurora Medical Clinic on Port Washington’s far west side was pegged as the future site of the city’s senior center Tuesday by the committee tasked with finding a new home for the facility.

The ad-hoc strategic planning committee unanimously recommended to the Commission on Aging that the city begin negotiating with Aurora to obtain the building at 1777 W. Grand Ave. for a senior or community center.

“It leaves us the most options, and when we leave ourselves the most options we have the best chance of getting things done,” Ald. Bill Driscoll, a member of the committee, said.

“With this, we have many options for the future.”

The city has said it will not extend the lease for the current senior center at 403 W. Foster St. beyond June 2017, and the committee has been looking at alternatives ever since.

The medical clinic was one of three sites that committee members visited during the past month — the others were St. John’s and St. Matthew churches.
