CDA members say primary use of south-side parcel should be residential development

Potential uses for a 44-acre parcel of undeveloped bluff land the City of Port Washington owns just south of the We Energies power plant will be discussed Thursday, now that the city has ended negotiations with Ansay Development.

Members of the city’s Community Development Authority weighed in on the debate Monday, with members expressing a desire for a primarily residential development on the land.

Jason Wittek, an adviser to the CDA, suggested the city hire a planning firm to create a master plan for the property, saying it is needed to ensure the right type of development there.

“If we don’t plan it, will we get the quality we’re looking for?” he said. “I’m afraid we’re going to get four streets and 40 lots. I think we could aspire to more.”

Wittek suggested the city consider a traditional urban neighborhood development that would incorporate not only single-family homes but also some townhouses, duplexes, triplexes and four-family courtyard apartments.

Some areas, such as the intersections with Sunset Road, South Wisconsin Street and Highway C, could be designated for mixed uses, he said, such as apartments over a coffeehouse.
