PW-S officials say potential donation underscores need for group to raise money for new football field, other upgrades

With a corporate donor waiting in the wings, the Port Washington-Saukville School District is facilitating the creation of a nonprofit foundation to fund outdoor improvements such as an artificial turf football field.

Supt. Michael Weber said an organization, which he is not at liberty to identify, has offered to give a substantial amount of money for outdoor school district improvements, but the caveat is that the donation must be made to a nonprofit, tax-exempt foundation.

“I don’t have the exact number (of the donation), but it’s substantial enough to get a foundation off to a good start,” he said.

The pending donation lends credence to the concept of an independent fundraising organization dedicated to doing with private funds what the district cannot with tax dollars.

The district’s priority has been the maintenance and renovation of its building, which was reflected in the $49.4 million referendum approved last year by voters. Most of that money will be spent on a sweeping high school makeover, but nothing has been earmarked for improvements of outdoor facilities.
