Board weighing bids from firms large enough to oversee complex work

A Port Washington-Saukville School Board that earlier this month hired an architectural firm without seeking competitive bids is taking the opposite approach to selecting a company to manage the construction of the most expensive school improvement project in the history of the district.

The board on Monday interviewed three construction management firms, selecting two finalists for the multimillion-dollar contract — Fond du Lac-based C.D. Smith Construction Inc. and Milwaukee-based CG Schmidt.

School officials eliminated from consideration the firm they initially talked about hiring, EDS Builders of Minnesota, saying the company, whose largest project to date is a $19 million school undertaking, is not large enough to oversee the district’s two-school, $49.4 million initiative approved by voters April 7.

The two finalists made it clear during interviews they are not underestimating the Port Washington High School project, which entails demolishing and rebuilding part of the school, building two hillside additions and renovating the rest of the school, whose original building dates to 1931. The project is estimated to take four years to complete.
