Referendum work is first priority but synthetic turf project is being studied

Outdoor athletic facilities are not part of the $49.4 million Port Washington-Saukville School District referendum plan approved by voters last month, but that’s not to say improvements like a synthetic-turf football field are not on the minds of school officials.

After a passing reference was made to a football field project during a school board meeting Monday, Supt. Michael Weber said in an interview Tuesday that just such a project would be a priority if private funds can be raised or if referendum projects are completed under budget and there is money remaining for the field.

Weber said the district’s first priority is the successful completion of a $45.6 million renovation of Port Washington High School and construction of a $3.8 million addition at Dunwiddie Elementary, but the concept of a new football field at its current site immediately west of the high school was discussed during early referendum planning to the point of securing rough cost estimates.

Director of Business Services Jim Froemming said a synthetic-turf field and improvements to support it, such as a new drainage system, are estimated to cost between $800,000 and $1 million.

Press box renovations are also being considered.

“I’d even like to see a no-dirt infield on our baseball field to further reduce maintenance costs,” Froemming said.
