District negotiates 5% rate with only architectural firm considered for $49.4 million referendum projects

The Port Washington-Saukville School Board last week approved a contract that will pay Bray Architects an estimated $2.1 million to design renovations and new buildings at Port Washington High School and an addition to Dunwiddie Elementary School.

The firm will be paid a percentage of construction costs — 4.9% of the $40.4 million high school cost and 5% of the $3.4 million elementary school cost.

The total cost of the projects is $49.4 million, which includes a 5% contingency and money for other expenses, including the services of a construction management firm and furnishings.

Less than a week after voters approved the April 7 referendum that cleared the way for the projects, the board voted to hire Bray without seeking competing bids and before the district had negotiated a contract with the firm, which was initially hired by the district in late 2013 to conduct a facilities study and conceive a referendum project.

Despite that, administrators said, the district was able to negotiate a favorable contract.

“While you (the board) chose Bray, know that didn’t cut off the negotiation process,” Director of Business Services Jim Froemming said.
