Milwaukee County Transit, union dispute halts regular, Summerfest service to Milwauke

Hundreds of Ozaukee County residents who planned to take the Ozaukee County Express Bus and the Summerfest bus Wednesday morning were left stranded after the bus drivers began what union officials said would be a 72-hour

Transit Supt. Jason Wittek, who late Tuesday night was headed out to post notices at the bus stops, said the county had no option but to shut down the bus service after Amalgamated Transit Union Local 998 called the strike, which
began at 3 a.m. Wednesday.

“It happened pretty quickly,” Wittek said, adding he was expecting a number of calls from frustrated passengers Wednesday morning.

The strike by bus drivers and mechanics was announced after an all-day mediation effort Tuesday failed to break an impasse on a new labor contract.

On Monday, union members overwhelmingly rejected the latest contract offer and, in a separate vote, agreed to strike.
