Mitchell suffered broken leg responding to blaze during Sunday storm

Port Washington Fire Chief Mark Mitchell was seriously injured while checking out a fire in a house struck by lightning during Sunday night’s storms.

Mitchell had gone to the attic of the house at 421 N. Park St. to check on the fire and was coming down a steep flight of narrow stairs when he fell, dislocating his ankle and breaking his lower leg, Assistant Fire Chief Steve Schmidt said.

Mitchell was taken by ambulance to Aurora Medical Center in Grafton, where he underwent surgery the following day, Schmidt told the Police and Fire Commission Monday.

Mayor Tom Mlada told aldermen Tuesday that Mitchell was doing well and may be released from the hospital by the end of the week.

The fire was one of two called in about  6:30 p.m. Sunday, Schmidt said.
