Plan calls for county, city to split $2 million preserve cost PDF Print E-mail

Local contributions may be only way to buy natural area that is key to Port development, officials say

The Ozaukee County Board will consider a resolution next week that calls for the county and City of Port Washington to each pay as much as $1 million to purchase what is to become a 101-acre nature preserve in the heart of the proposed Cedar Vineyard
subdivision.

The idea of the county and city shouldering the cost of the $2 million land acquisition is a radical departure from an earlier plan, one that wouldn’t be nearly as palatable if it weren’t for a related development proposal.

In addition to preserving and providing public access to about one mile of Lake Michigan frontage and two areas of natural significance, the nature preserve is key to the Illinois-based Highview Group’s plan for a 73-home subdivision, vineyard and winery that would include the preserve on former VK Development land along Highway C on the far south side of Port Washington because it would offset the company’s land acquisition costs.
