Port council now negotiating sale of second lot near marina PDF Print E-mail

Land near controversial Blues Factory site also subject of closed-door meetings

Port Washington officials are now in closed-session talks and negotiations for three city-owned parcels of property — the car and trailer parking lot south of the former Victor’s restaurant as well as the marina parking lot proposed for the Blues Factory entertainment complex and bluff land adjacent to We Energies eyed as a corporate headquarters by Ansay Development.

This is the largest number of closed-door negotiations involving city-owned land to take place in recent history.

“I don’t ever remember this many,” City Administrator Mark Grams said. 

That’s a reflection of both the economic upswing and the city’s commitment to smart development that will increase the tax base and bring more people to downtown to live and shop, Mayor Tom Mlada said.

“It’s a really exciting time,” he said. “These things are really difference-making. 

“We had hoped for this level of development. The key thing is can you do this while retaining your core character. I think we’re well on the path. You’re not going to see the character of downtown be significantly different in 20 years.”

But not everyone agrees. The proposed sale of the marina parking lot has divided the city, with many people saying it is prime lakefront property that should remain public.
