Utility had 3,500 truckloads moved in Town of Grafton during controversial project

We Energies finished a controversial project to remove 53,000 cubic yards of fly ash site from a former landfill off Stonecroft Drive in the Town of Grafton last week.

We Energies spokesman Cathy Schulze said Edgerton, the earth-moving firm hired by the utility, finished transferring the fly ash to a regulated landfill off Highway 32 in the Town of Grafton on Sept. 22.

Edgerton then graded and seeded the Stonecroft Drive site, finishing the restoration work on Saturday.

“Everything went smoothly,” Schulze said. “It was a big job, but they took care of it as quickly as possible. They only lost a few days to bad weather, so they were able to finish a little ahead of schedule.”

Town Chairman Lester Bartel said the town received few complaints about the work, most of them when the project began in mid-August.

He credited this to the contractor and the town’s decision to hire a supervisor to inspect the site daily to ensure proper procedures were being followed and residents’ concerns were addressed.
