Deputies’ group files grievance after detective’s reimbursement docked by value of $60 store coupon

Ozaukee County and the unions that have represented its employees have clashed before, but never over $60 in Kohl’s Cash — until now.

The retail chain’s coupon is at the center of a grievance filed by the Ozaukee County Deputy Sheriff’s Association, Local 115, of the Labor Association of Wisconsin Inc., alleging the county violated its collective bargaining agreement with the union when it deducted $60 from a detective’s uniform reimbursement request to account for Kohl’s Cash he received at the time of the purchase.

The grievance was filed Nov. 24, the day after Detective Gary Speth submitted a reimbursement request for $500 and was informed by the county’s Finance Department that, because he received the $60 coupon, that amount would be deducted from the reimbursement.

Sheriff Jim Johnson denied the grievance on Dec. 3, noting he does not control Finance Department policies. A week later, the union notified the county it would pursue the matter.

The Executive Committee was scheduled to consider the grievance Wednesday. Human Resources Director Jason Dzwinel has recommended denying it.
