PW-S school officials call on state legislators to block governor’s proposed cuts to preserve options for students

The Port Washington-Saukville School Board is calling on the Wisconsin Legislature to  block Gov. Scott Walker’s proposed cut in K-12 public education funding, saying preserving state aid is essential to maintaining the programs the district has fought to establish and protect during more than a decade of lean budgets.

The board on Monday endorsed a resolution and letter to state legislators, which it plans to approve next week, expressing its “serious concerns about the Governor’s proposed budget related to K-12 education.”

The resolution calls on the Legislature to reinstate the funding Walker has proposed cutting and increase state aid by an amount equivalent to the consumer price index.

At issue is a provision in Walker’s proposed 2015-17 state budget that calls for cutting categorical state aid by $150 per student. That would cost the Port-Saukville School District $400,000 next school year and nearly double its estimated deficit, leaving officials to deal with a shortfall of $750,000 in the 2015-16 budget.
