Drawings for $45.6 million referendum project reveal extensive rebuild that will result in like-new school

If it wasn’t for the fact some walls, a few classrooms and part of a gym will be retained, Port Washington-Saukville School District officials could drop the word “like” from their “like-new” description of the $45.6 million Port Washington High School they are planning.

Preliminary designs presented by Bray Architects to the Building and Grounds Committee Monday illustrate what will be a vast departure from the current interior design in terms of both form and function.

It will, for all intents and purposes, be a new school.

A cramped, lower-level cafeteria will be replaced by a spacious, first-floor commons and two-level eating area just off the main entrance to the school.

Inefficient classrooms spread throughout the rambling building will be replaced by modern learning areas grouped on the north side of the school, where a new three-story academic wing will feature pods of classrooms surrounding learning areas that can be used in various ways.

The two-level library will adjoin the academic wing.
