Teen’s arrest for theft of now-missing .44 magnum sparks fears, absences school

A 17-year-old Port Washington High School student whose arrest Monday sparked concern among parents — about 100 of whom kept their children home from school Tuesday — has been charged with stealing a .44 magnum handgun from a house across from the school.

Dakota B. Manske, a Port High senior who was charged Tuesday in Ozaukee County Circuit Court with felony and misdemeanor weapons charges, is accused of stealing the gun from a home at 404 W. Jackson St. in July.

Manske was in jail Tuesday, but there were still concerns because the gun, which he reportedly bragged about and showed to other students in a parking lot next to the school, was allegedly taken from him and is still missing.

“I really wish we had that gun,” Police Chief Kevin Hingiss said.

Police officers launched their investigation Sunday, Oct. 11, after receiving numerous anonymous tips regarding the stolen gun. Officers stopped Manske on the way to school Monday, interviewed him at the police station and arrested him later that morning, Hingiss said.

According to the criminal complaint, a number of Port High students interviewed by police Monday said Manske had shown them the .44 magnum revolver he said he had stolen.
