Opponents of Port council’s decision to market property to developers want lot along marina to be a public park

Opponents of the Port Washington Common Council’s decision to market a city-owned lakefront parking lot to developers are circulating a petition asking aldermen to reconsider the action and instead consider creating a park on the property.

“We want to try to keep the city from going in a direction that really isn’t appropriate,” said Pat Wilborn, who is circulating the petition. “I’m against commercializing the marina.

“The petition says we don’t want private development there. Kiwanis Park would be a  nice addition there ... a tremendous asset. Even if they put up a pavilion there, it will block some views but still be a public use.”

The petition, which Wilborn said Monday will be available in a number of downtown businesses this week, urges aldermen “not to pursue the private development of this land and to consider a partnership with a local community group to develop this land as green space that would be available to all citizens and visitors of Port Washington.”
