Port students pick Obama PDF Print E-mail

If it were up to the students at Dunwiddie Elementary School in Port Washington, Barack Obama would be elected to a second term as president. Students participating in the national  Studies Weekly Every Kid Votes mock election chose Obama over challenger Mitt Romney, 173-146, Tuesday. Among those voting exactly a week before the real election was first-grader Poetry Howell, who cast her ballot, then proudly displayed her “I voted” sticker. Paraprofessional Lois Hartwig, who coordinated the project, said the mock election is a good way to teach children about the electoral process their parents will participate in next week. She noted that all students at the school had the opportunity to vote and student council members served as poll workers. Nationwide results were supposed to be announced Tuesday, but Studies Weekly extended voting through Friday because of superstorm Sandy. The educational organization notes that students picked the eventual winner of the presidential races in 2004 and 2008.
