$39.9 million facilities improvements to begin after first week of classes

As Grafton schools welcomed students and teachers back to the classroom for the start of the school year on Monday, the School District is preparing to begin its $39.9 million facilities projects.
The district plans to start excavation early next week at Grafton High School and Woodview and Kennedy elementary schools. The excavation will first occur outside the high school’s gym with other digging taking place along the exterior of the two elementary schools’ gyms and classrooms.
“The emphasis is to move the dirt and get the foundations in before the frost hits, so the primary concern right now is working on the exterior of the buildings,” Supt. Jeff Nelson said.
Construction for the new additions to Woodview and Kennedy elementary schools is set to begin in September and are to be completed by June.
The additions for both elementary schools will include new classrooms that will provide three sections for each grade level. Gym space will be added to both schools to accommodate students from Grafton Elementary School, which will be razed in August 2018 after the construction at Kennedy and Woodview elementary schools is complete.
The elementary schools’ kitchens will be remodeled and the classrooms will be updated with new technology.
In addition to the construction at the elementary schools, work will also include painting, replacing ceiling tiles and improving the schools’ heating, air conditioning and ventilation. A new security system will be installed in both schools.
Renovations to both schools are planned to begin once the school year is finished in June and the work is expected to be complete by August, in time for the start of the 2018-19 school year.
At Grafton High School, construction for the career technical education spaces and gym will begin in September and will be completed in June.
Construction for a new addition to the high school’s commons will begin in May and will be completed by August.
Locker room renovations will start in June and will be finished by August. New family locker rooms will also be added and the training room will be remodeled.
Renovations to the science facilities, band room, school offices and kitchen will begin in June and will be finished in August.
Grafton residents approved the $39.9 million project during a referendum vote in April after a $47.7 million referendum and $1.8 million plan to upgrade outdoor athletic and recreation facilities failed to pass last year.
