School Board upholds fee for veteran teacher who is leaving district

Members of the Northern Ozaukee School Board agreed they are grateful for the years of service Deanna Nelson provided the district, but that gratitude was not without its limits.

A divided School Board voted not to waive a $500 fee for liquidated damages after Nelson submitted her resignation from the district.

For seven years, she served as a business and information technology teacher at Ozaukee High School.

Nelson was also the school’s Workforce 2020 Youth Apprenticeship coordinator, yearbook advisor and a member of the SAIL faculty leadership team.

She has accepted a position as technology integrator for the Sheboygan Area School District.

In discussing her resignation from the district, Nelson told the School Board she recently learned a grant she wrote was successful in securing the funding to buy 22 Apple iPads that
will be used at the high school.

“My students have changed me profoundly over these past seven years,” Nelson wrote in her resignation letter.

“My colleagues will forever hold a special place in my heart for their steadfast dedication to our students and our school community despite almost blinding adversity, at times.”

A motion to accept Nelson’s resignation was amended to waive the $500 fee assessed because of the late date of the notice. The charge is spelled out in the employee handbook.

The waiver was proposed by board member Kendall Thistle, and supported by fellow board member Tom Hoffmann.

“The way I see it, this is a pittance compared to what she had done for the district,” Hoffmann said.

Board member Stacie Stark advocated following the policy.

“Is what we are saying, ‘If it is a teacher who is good and we like, we shouldn’t assess the fee and if we don’t like her we should assess the fee,’” Stark said.

“Is that really how we want to operate?”

The board then voted 5-3 not to waive the fee, and 8-0 to accept Nelson’s resignation.
