Bike contest, games, music, food on city’s Fourth of July agenda

A traditional family-friendly Fourth of July celebration is being planned for Port Washington.
Holiday activities will formally get underway Tuesday when the 11 a.m. parade sets off from the corner of Wisconsin and Main streets in downtown.
The parade will head south to Grand Avenue, then turn east to Franklin Street. Marchers will then turn on Jackson Street and head to Lake Street, then disperse at Veterans Memorial Park.
Anyone wishing to take part in the parade, which is sponsored by the Ozaukee Press and the Port Chamber of Commerce, is asked to call Will Schanen at 284-3494, extension 1115.
A special feature in the parade are the bikes, wagons and scooters decorated by local youngsters. Bike decorating kits are available prior to the event at Port Washington State Bank’s Port office and the Port Washington Parks and Recreation office.
The decorated vehicles will be judged at the park beginning at about 11:30 a.m., with trophies and ribbons, as well as prizes, presented to the top vote-getters in various age divisions.
Mayor Tom Mlada will offer a welcome and emcee the bike contest.
Representatives of Sassnitz, Germany, Port Washington’s Sister City, will take part in the events, and following the contest will join Port officials in signing the formal Sister City agreement.
A variety of family-friendly activities will be held in the park.
A watermelon seed-spitting contest will be held, with prizes awarded to the winners of age divisions.
There will also be a bounce house and a giant Jenga game set up in the park.
There will be a basket raffle for items donated by local merchants. The winners must be present to claim their prizes.
Live music will be performed at the bandshell from about 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. by Vinyl Groove.
The Port Washington High School Athletic Booster Club and the Veterans of Foreign Wars will have food and beverages available for purchase at the park.
Fireworks shot off from Coal Dock Park will conclude the day’s activities at dusk.
The Port Exploreum is holding a special fireworks event that will run from 7 p.m. until the conclusion of the show.
Food and beverages will be available, with those participating able to watch the fireworks from the Exploreum’s second-floor deck.
The cost is $15 for members, $20 for nonmembers and $10 for children, and advance registration is required by calling 284-2406.
