A tree that fell on electrical lines is being blamed for a power outage on Port Washington’s north side early Wednesday morning.

About 1,700 customers lost power about 7 a.m. July 9, We Energies spokesman Cathy Schulze said. Power was restored around 9:15 a.m.

The outage affected customers in an area bordered by Lake Drive on the north, Western Avenue on the south, Hales Trail on the east and South Ravine Street on the west, Schulze said.

Port Washington police officers opened the stop signs that are on the traffic light poles at the intersection of Highway LL and Wisconsin Street, effectively turning the crossing into a four-way stop during the outage.Daily-Press

Although both Thomas Jefferson Middle School and Lincoln Elementary School lost power, summer school classes went on as scheduled, Director of Business Services Jim Froemming said.
