Port Washington won’t have a city ice rink this winter.

The Parks and Recreation Board has agreed not to set up the city’s rink in Veterans Memorial Park, citing the cost and lack of use by residents and visitors, parks director Charlie Imig said.

“I’m sure there’s a handful of people using it,” Imig said Tuesday. “But it costs a lot to maintain, and if there aren’t that many people using it we have to consider that fact.”

In addition to the time workers spend setting up the rink, the department is charged for the water used to create the ice, he said. There must be at least four inches of ice in the rink for skating, Imig noted.

The two student representatives on the parks board told officials that ice skating isn’t really a priority for most youths, he added. The Ozaukee Ice Center is where many youths skate, especially hockey players.

In recent years, use has been hampered by relatively warm winter weather, Imig said.

“It rained last winter,” he said.

The department needs to buy a new liner for the rink every couple of years at a cost of $1,500 to $2,000, Daily-PressImig said.

Just because the rink won’t be set up this year doesn’t mean there won’t be one in the future, Imig added.

“We’ll see what happens this winter,” he said. “If everyone’s clamoring for it, we’ll revisit the issue.”
