There has been a lot of talk about the Port Washington-Saukville School District’s $1 million technology initiative that has put iPads and laptop computers in the hands of students. Now educators want to show the public how this technology will be used to better educate students.

Thomas Jefferson Middle School will host a Tech Fest from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18.

The event, which is free, will feature roughly 20 classroom presentations by teachers who will demonstrate how technology is being used to teach various subjects. Those taking part in the event can attend as many presentations as they wish.
The goals of the technology initiative include tailoring teaching to the specific needs of students and encouraging independent learning.

Administrators have also said high-tech classrooms will better prepare students for opportunities after school.

“We want to show what our district has provided for us to meet the unique needs of every student,” Principal Arlan Galarowicz said. “Most people will be amazed at what technology can do for education.”

The event is geared to area residents in general, although it will be particularly informative for parents, Galarowicz said.

“When kids come home and tell their parents what they’re doing in school, parents may have no idea what they’re talking about,” he said. “Now we can show them what it’s all about.”

Starting last week, students in fifth through seventh grades each received an Apple iPad to use as their own at school and at home for the school year.

Students in eighth grade through high school received Samsung Chromebooks.

Thomas Jefferson Middle School is at 1403 N. Holden St., Port Washington.
