Steven R. VanEss, 55, of Kingsport, Tenn., died at his home from a heart condition on Sunday, Sept. 3.

    Mr. VanEss was born Oct. 9, 1961, in Sheboygan to Roger and Sue Evanoff VanEss. He graduated from Cedar Grove High School in 1980 and attended the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay. He married Penny Campbell on Oct. 23, 1982, and they had two sons together.
    Mr. VanEss worked for 35 years in the information technology department for Eastman Chemical until his retirement on May 10.
    He enjoyed hunting, fishing, dog breeding and gardening. Mr. VanEss was known for his lilies, koi ponds and indoor aquariums. He had a love for animals, especially his dogs and pheasants. Mr. VanEss enjoyed cooking, and he was known for his smoked ribs and pulled pork. He was also an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers and Nashville Predators. 

    Mr. VanEss is survived by his sons Benjamin of Kingsport, Tenn., and Nicholas (Jennifer) of Jonesborough, Tenn.; father Roger of Cedar Grove; sister Brenda (Jerry) Depies of Cedar Grove; brother Calvin (Jean) of Belgium; and former wife Penny VanEss of Kingsport, Tenn.
    Mr. VanEss was preceded in death by his mother Sue VanEss.
    Funeral services will be held at Eastlawn Cemetery in Kingsport, Tenn., and also at First Reformed Church in Cedar Grove on Friday, Sept. 29, at 6 p.m.
Visitation will be at the church on Friday from 4 p.m. until the time of service.
    A memorial fund is being established in his name.
    Wenig Funeral Home, Oostburg, is handling the arrangements.
