Raymond Wendt loved to make people laugh with his stories.

“He was a bartender his whole life and ran bars and restaurants since he was 19,” daughter Ashley Wendt said of her father, who ran Ray’s Clubhouse at Port Washington’s American Legion Post 82 for 24 years. “He was a true storyteller.”

Mr. Wendt died Saturday, May 13, at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital in Mequon. The Grafton resident was 73.

He was born Nov. 3, 1943, in Milwaukee.

Mr. Wendt is survived by his wife Jane of 49 years;  sister Clara Hamilton (Robert) and Tess Pilarzyk; brother Peter Wendt (BJ); daughters Marie Recknagel (Chris) of Milwaukee, Raymond Wendt (Sandra) of Fox Point, Nicola Creeley (Kevin) of Lake City, Minn., Sachia Wendt of Mequon and Ashley Wendt of Corpus Christi, Texas; and grandchildren Tristan, Aidan, Ada, and  Talon.

Mr. Wendt was an honored veteran that served in the U.S. Marine Corp and owned several businesses throughout his lifetime.

He was an avid fisherman, a history buff, and loved to travel with his wife.

A private celebration of Mr. Wendt’s life will be held June 5.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the family in support of funeral costs are requested.
