The Village of Fredonia Plan Commission voted Monday to allow the erection of a 190-foot telecommunications monopole by AT&T in the Town of Fredonia near the intersection of highways A and H just east of the village.

The village holds extraterritorial jurisdiction over the site because it’s within 1.5 miles of the village limits, and could have vetoed the project.

Commission members balked at the monopole project when it was first proposed to them in September, wondering why other locations, such as putting the antenna on top of the village water tower, would not work.

They also questioned whether the 75-by-75-foot leased space would contain the monopole if it fell and wanted an engineering certification stating that.

On Monday, Rick Hartman, a consultant for the project, supplied technical information to commission members showing the water tower would not work.

Hartman also said the monopole is designed to fall in on itself, but he failed to provide a letter from an engineer stating that.

The approval is contingent on receiving the letter within 30 days.

The village’s comprehensive plan “suggests” the area will be developed for commercial purposes at some point, Village President Don Dohrwardt said.

Village officials are considering hiring a consultant to recommend areas for future commercial, residential and industrial development, and that location and other nearby sites have been mentioned as potential choices.

The Fredonia Town Board is expected to consider the monopole project when it meets at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13.
