These big fish stories are true

The fish were fewer but fatter in the annual public fishing derby held by the Great Lakes Sport Fishermen Club’s Ozaukee Chapter last Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Entries were down — 392 in all — due to northeast winds that caused the fish to scatter, but the winners were large, club president Bob Hammen said. The club donated some of its catches to the Port Washington food pantry and paid cash prizes to the top 10 places in each of the five categories, including a prize for the largest fish each day. “Overall, it was successful,” Hammen said of the event. Winners in each category were (above from left) Mark Ebbert, brown trout; Renee Erickson, coho salmon; Jason Jansma, rainbow trout; Tanner Schmidt, king salmon; and Nathan Lutze, lake trout.
