Salmon and trout fishing derby winners announced

While it started and ended with hard rain, lake conditions were good for the annual Salmon and Trout Public Fishing Derby in Port Washington two weeks ago, sponsored by the Ozaukee Chapter of the Great Lakes Sport Fisherman Club.
The winners were: Doug Hammes, chinook salmon, weighing 25.35 pounds and measuring 38 inches long; Ron Mueller, coho salmon, 8.65 pounds and 27.5 inches; Matt Neumyer, rainbow trout, 13.5 pounds, 34 inches; Carmen Tilidetzke, lake trout, 21.8 pounds, 37 inches; and Dani Pies, brown trout, 21.9 pounds, 32.5 inches.
In the Big Fish of the Day categories, the winners were: Scott Philp, Friday, chinook salmon, 20.8 pounds, 38.5 inches; Hammes, Saturday, chinook salmon, 25.35 pounds, 38 inches; and Pies, Sunday, brown trout, 2.19 pounds, 32.5 inches.
A total of 458 fish were caught and registered with the derby. That included 60 chinook salmon, 103 coho salmon, nine brown trout, 151 lake trout and 135 rainbow trout.
That number is up from last year’s 392 when northeast winds caused the fish to scatter.
A total of 50 place prizes were given out for first through 10th in each of the five divisions.
Profits will be used for the Ozaukee Chapter’s club projects, donations and to protect and improve the salmon and trout fishery.
