When high school baseball moved entirely to a spring season, an opportunity opened up for players looking to continue partaking in America’s pastime during summer.

The Summer Baseball League of Wisconsin was formed, and Port Washington fielded a team made up of freshmen, junior varsity and varsity players.

“Everyone in the league approached it as a way to get our younger guys some opportunities,” coach C.J. Koehler said.

A new WIAA rule allowed high school coaches to coach their players since school was out.

There were no playoffs, just a slate of games. The Pirates finished 4-7 and in fifth place in the six-team North Division. West Bend West took first with an 11-5 mark.

In other baseball news, Port senior pitcher George Klassen was selected to play in the Perfect Game All-American Classic at Petco Park in San Diego, where the Padres play. The game is Aug. 11.

Klassen plans to play baseball at the University of Minnesota.
