PHOTO OP ED: A fitting sign for a pelican fishing frenzy

American white pelicans competed for food last weekend in the west slip of the Port Washington harbor under the historic FISH sign on the now gentrified Smith Bros. shanty. Joe Dean of Port Washington photographed the enormous birds doing what they do with amazing effectiveness—scooping fish out of the water with formidable beaks and pouches. Much larger than their brown-feathered cousins, white pelicans are not only prodigious fishers, consuming as much as three pounds of fish per day each, but impressive fliers. Their wing span measures about nine feet. These pelicans were just visiting. Resident flocks are found on Green Bay.
