Experience and skill ruled the day in the girls’ basketball opener for Ozaukee and Port Washington high schools last Thursday.

The Warriors knocked off Port on the road, 70-39.

Ozaukee took a 36-16 halftime lead and cruised.

Star guard Becca Schauer, who eclipsed 1,000 career points last season, scored 22 on 7-for-14 shooting. Gabby Klas had 13 and Greta Klas and Mallory Miller each had eight. Cami Miller had six and Kelley Large had five. Ten Warriors scored.

“I thought once we got going, we got into the flow a little bit. We got a little more comfortable running the offense in the second half,” coach Tim Wolff said, also crediting his team’s defense.

“I thought Ashlee Mueller did a great job of harassing their young point guard and made it hard on her whenever she was in the game,” he said.

Peyton Mueller-Stenz and Kayla Johnson each scored 10 to lead Port. Tiana Davis added nine.

“A lot of the girls that we’re playing, it was their first varsity experience,” coach Jakob Wahl said.

“Ozaukee’s got a really solid program and has some juniors and seniors.”
