Fredonia village trustees will now be able to attend meetings remotely after the Village Board approved a new policy.

The policy allows trustees to attend meetings electronically if they are unable to physically attend the meeting due to illness or disability, business travel or family commitments.

With the policy, a trustee can attend a meeting remotely by phone, video or internet connection if he or she gives two-days notice, physically attends at least 75% of meetings in a year’s time, and a quorum of the board is present on site.

A board member attending remotely cannot be driving while the meeting is being conducted and can participate in closed sessions only as long as privacy of the meeting can be maintained. For instance, remotely attending a meeting while sitting in a restaurant or other public place would not be allowed.

The policy was drafted by the village’s  Technology Committee.

“It is a tool to allow us to attend meetings we are elected to attend. It is not intended to be an excuse to not attend meetings,” Technology Committee Chairman Richard Abegglen said.

The policy was approved unanimously by the Village Board.
