Miller is honored twice

Ozaukee alumnus in Double-A baseball earns Player of the Week Award for second time

Owen Miller has made Soddies history.

The 2015 Ozaukee High School graduate and member of the Double-A Amarillo Sod Poodles, affectionately known as the Soddies, was named the Texas League Player of the Week for a second time this season.

The infielder is the first Sod Poodle to earn the honor twice in one season.

In the six games from July 29 through Aug. 4, Miller batted went 9-for-21 at the plate (.429 average) with seven runs, four doubles, one triple, two home runs and seven RBI. He had a .500 on-base percentage and only struck out once in the span.

As of Monday, Miller had a seven-game hitting streak. He leads the Texas League in hits with 121. His batting average of .295 is sixth in the league, and, with his two doubles on Sunday, Miller is seventh in the league with 38 extra-base hits.

His first Player of the Week honor came after a hot stretch from June 10 to 16. He went 13-for-23 (.565) over six games with one double, one home run, four RBI, four runs scored and two strikeouts.

Miller has two walk-off hits this season, an RBI single in the ninth inning and a three-run home run in the 11th inning.

The Sod Poodles are 26-17 and in first place in the four-team Texas South Division for the second half of the season. They are 60-51 overall and won the division in the first half of the season, guaranteeing them a playoff game.

Miller, 22, grew up playing Little League in Fredonia and was coached by his father. In high school, he played one year for Ozaukee High and three years with the Hitters Baseball Club team in Racine.

He was drafted by the Padres in the third round, the 84th pick overall, last year. He played for the short season single-A affiliate Tri-City Dust Devils and made the Northwest League all-star team.  He was then promoted to the single-A Fort Wayne TinCaps and then the Double-A San Antonio Missions, a team that became the Sod Poodles, for the playoffs. This season, he stayed with the Soddies.
