The Village of Belgium will be getting two Little Free Libraries.

The Village Board approved ordering two libraries for $600 this month.

A local Boy Scout troop will help build the libraries, which come in kits.

The libraries are essentially large birdhouses with dimensions of 18x18x22 inches. The idea is people drop off books for others and take ones they want to read. They operate on the honor system.

The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Committee last fall recommended the village budget $600 for the libraries after a resident requested them.

Linda Clausing brought the idea of having Free Little Libraries to the committee.

While the Monarch Library System’s Bookmobile makes three regular stops in Belgium, the Free Little Libraries will be permanent.

They will be located at Village Hall and in Community Park.

Village Clerk Julie Lesar said she plans to order the library kits next week.
