LETTERS: Roseann Barr’s words weren’t ‘ill-chosen’—they were racist

To Ozaukee Press:

I would like to respond to the letter to the editor about the firing of Roseanne Barr that was published in last week’s Ozaukee Press.

Larry Williamson was upset that Barr was fired because of her racial comments.

He referred to them as “ill-chosen.”

They should be called what they were—they were racist, and Barr has a history of being a racist.

In 2009, Barr posed for the camera dressed as Hitler standing next to an oven and holding a tray with human shaped burnt cookies.

She called Israel a “Nazi state” in 2009 and promoted a Holocaust-denying musician in 2013.

In 2013 she also tweeted, “Susan Rice is a man with big swinging ape balls.”

The tweet that got Barr fired by ABC stated, “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby—vj,” which referred to Valerie Jarrett, a long-time African American adviser to President Barack Obama.

Mr. Williamson went on to try to compare a racist to a comedian, Samantha Bee, who called Ivanka Trump a vile name during her comedy routine on her show “Full Frontal” on TBS.

In the episode that Mr. Williamson was referring to, Bee recapped the recent New York Times report that the government has lost track of approximately 1,500 immigrant children.

Unfortunately, the mainstream media and Mr. Williamson chose to focus on a four-letter word used in the episode, rather than our government separating children from their parents, including those applying for asylum, when they are detained or apprehended at the border.

Where is the outrage at our government’s mistreatment of human beings?

The letter writer claimed “half of America supports the president and finds these liberal comments very offensive.”

I’m not sure what kind of free time Mr. Williamson has, or what resources he has access to, but I am 100% confident that he can’t speak for half of the American people any more than I or anyone else can.

As a country, we have far greater challenges than the cancellation of a television show or criticism of the first family by comedians.

The Mueller investigation is uncovering more illegal activity tied to the Trump administration every day.

We have a president who has lied to the American people more than 3,000 times in 466 days.

He has now alienated America from our allies with his childish tweets and undemocratic policies.

Our country is in the middle of a constitutional crisis, and it is time to check our moral compasses as a nation.

Do we want to be a country of haters and racists, or a country that takes care of the weakest among us?
