LETTER: Gerrymandering ruling means some of our votes don’t matter

To Ozaukee Press:

With their vote allowing partisan gerrymandering, the U.S. Supreme Court majority has sided with those interested in destroying our way of government and who wish to make many of our votes meaningless.

Gerrymandering is the legislative process of drawing voting district lines in such a way that a district becomes heavily Democratic or Republican. So if you are a Republican in a Democratic district, your vote for that district race has no meaning. If a Democrat in a Republican district, it has no meaning.

Is this what we want as Americans? We may have differences in what we believe on the issues of the day, but when it comes to basic rights we should be Americans, not Democrats or Republicans. The members of the Supreme Court failed us in protecting those basic rights.

If someone is trying to take away my rights today, the chances are they will be after yours tomorrow.
