LETTER: Friendly merchants helped to make Port great place to live

To Ozaukee Press:
A few weeks ago there was a nice article about the Lueptows in Ozaukee Press.
In 1953, I built my first house on Benjamin Street in Port Washington. I was pretty poor, but I could go down to Lueptow’s store and charge a gallon of paint or whatever. That was before credit cards.
In the 30 years we lived in Port, I did a lot of business with the Lueptows, as well as the Bievers, Bleys, Port State Bank and other businesses in downtown Port. What a great place Port Washington was, and what a great time it was to live there, with so many good people to deal with.
There has always been much more to Port Washington than that beautiful church on the hill and the lake to the east.
It’s too bad we have a president who would rather go to Russia than let little kids stay with their parents as they try to enter this country to live the good life we have here.
