LETTER: ‘Marvelous Mormon’ stands out for courageous vote on Trump

To Ozaukee Press:

“Romney stands alone in vote to remove Trump.”

This headline was featured on the front page of numerous newspapers nationwide on Thursday, Feb. 6, after the Senate voted to acquit President Trump. It’s truly amazing that there was only one prophetic voice in our entire U.S. Senate. The other voices deserve to be called pathetic.

Amazingly, in every Catholic Church worldwide on Sunday, Feb. 9, these Sacred Scriptures were proclaimed — Isaiah 58:7-10; Psalms 112:4-9; 1 Corinthians 2:1-5; and finally, the Gospel, Matthew 5:13-16. In my view, they all refer to Sen. Romney.

The last line of this Gospel says this, “Your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.”

In fact, this past Monday, Feb. 10, I sent a copy of these readings to Romney and wrote to him in my note, “I applaud your Gospel convictions. I truly call you the Marvelous Mormon, but I am deeply embarrassed that not a single Catholic senator had both your wisdom and courage to do the same.”

What the recent acquittal of Trump says to our nation is exactly what the acquittal of former President Bill Clinton said to Americans in February 1999. In both cases, all voting fell strictly within party lines, except for Romney. Ten years from now, 20 years from now, 100 years from now, all true Americans will applaud the brains and the guts of Romney, and the message for us in 2020 is that our nation desperately needs a strong third party, the Purple Party for the people. And finally, a plaintive prayer to our greatest president, “Abraham Lincoln, pray for us.”

My Jan. 23 letter to Ozaukee Press noted that two Wisconsin senators, Herb Kohl and Russ Feingold, were critical of Clinton but still voted to acquit him. I strongly believe that both Clinton and Trump should have been removed from office, and a strong third party, with many others just like Romney, would have done just that to both presidents.
