A gift of books

The timing was accidental but appropriate nonetheless С on Thursday, March 1, the eve of national Read Across America Day, Brynn Didier (left), an eighth-grader at St. John XXIII Catholic School in Port Washington, donated more than 2,000 used books she collected to Next Door’s Books for Kids, which is part of an organization that provides early education and gives books to children in Milwaukee’s central city. She presented the books to Jackie Shanti (right), coordinator of the book collection program. Brynn, a member of Girl Scout Troop 8709, spearheaded the book drive as part of her Silver Award project. The Silver Award is one of the Girl Scout’s highest honors.                                    Photo by Sam Arendt
