Carol Schlenvogt

Carol A. Schlenvogt of the Town of Fredonia served many people in Ozaukee County as a longtime waitress at two landmark restaurants.

Mrs. Schlenvogt was a waitress at the Port Hotel in Port Washington for more than 20 years, and she also worked at the Nantucket Restaurant in Mequon for more than 10 years.

The job suited her, her husband Mark said, noting she was a people-person.

“She loved working with the girls,” her husband said, noting Mrs. Schlenvogt forged many close-knit friendships with her fellow waitresses.

“They hung out together,” he said. “It was a girl thing.”

Mrs. Schlenvogt also worked on the food line at Columbia St. Mary’s Ozaukee Hospital in Mequon for about five years before she retired.

Mrs. Schlenvogt died of leukemia Wednesday, April 10, at Gables on the Pond in Random Lake. She was 71.

Mrs. Schlenvogt was born on April 13, 1947, in South Dakota, one of seven girls born to Harry and Margaret Reuland Krause.

When she was a child, the family moved to the West Bend area.

On Dec. 28, 1963, she married Mark Schlenvogt at Holy Angels Catholic Church in West Bend.

They settled in Port Washington but moved to their farm outside Fredonia in 1973.

Mrs. Schlenvogt showed German shepherds for about a decade, her husband said.

She got her first dog when, while driving home from work one night, she saw a stray German shepherd wandering on Highway 141, her husband said.

“She pulled the car over, opened the door and in it came,” he said.

She showed that dog, then began to raise and show purebred German shepherds, he said.

Still later, she raised and sold miniature dachshunds.

Mrs. Schlenvogt enjoyed flower gardening, landscaping around the buildings on the farm, her husband said. She especially loved roses, and carefully tended a climbing rose that extends over the family’s smokehouse for more than 15 years.

“She was a hard-working woman,” her husband said. “She was always a good person.”

Mrs. Schlenvogt is survived by her husband Mark of the Town of Fredonia; children Christine of Colorado, Jason of Belgium and Travis of the Town of Fredonia; and grandchildren Morgan, Jeremy, Audrey and Cody.

She is further survived by her sisters Phyllis (Dewayne) Stiefvater of West Bend, Marcella (Eugene) Newman of Hartford and Mary Jo (Dwayne) Stege of West Bend and brother-in-law Tom Fick.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Dorothy Otte, Bonnie Fick and Elizabeth Reuwsaat and brothers-in-law Norman Otte and Wilbert Reuwsaat.

At Mrs. Schlenvogt’s request, no services were held.

Funeral arrangements were handled through Eernisse Funeral Home, Port Washington.
