A public hearing on assessing properties on Edmaro Street in Fredonia for repairing sewer laterals will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 4,  before the regular Village Board meeting.

The sewer laterals will be repaired when Edmaro Street is rebuilt this year.

Trustees recently awarded a contract for the work to Mueller Excavating, which submitted the low bid of $355,673. The project will include replacing water mains, sanitary laterals and paving.

Each of 13 affected property owners would be assessed $3,500 to line the laterals that connect their homes to the village-owned main sewer line.

The addresses that would be assessed are 103, 107, 110, 113, 134, 137, 140, 145, 153, 158, 161 and 166 Edmaro St. and 310 Summit Dr.

Homeowners and other members of the public will be able to comment on the proposed assessments during the hearing.

Trustees will vote on the proposal during their regular meeting.

Lining the laterals is necessary, officials said, to reduce the amount of “clear water” seeping into the village storm sewer system through cracks and joints in sewer lines around the village.

The 13 homes are the first in what officials see as a plan to line laterals around the village whenever streets are replaced.

Laterals from the house to the street are owned by and the responsibility of property owners. Main sewer lines are owned by the village.

Under the proposal, property owners would be able to pay the $3,500 in one lump sum within 60 days after the work is completed or make five annual payments, plus a 2% interest charge.
