‘Tarzan’ presented at Port High this weekend


THE CAST OF “Tarzan” gathered for a dress rehearsal in preparation for this weekend’s staging of the musical, which is based on the Disney animated movie and Edgar Rice Burrough’s novel. The play tells the story of a baby discovered by a group of apes after a shipwreck and raised by a gorilla named Kala. The title character is played by Gavin Muller as a youth and Alex Orten as an adult. The play will be staged at Port High at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22 and 23, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24. “Tarzan” is being staged at Port Washington High School Friday through Sunday, Feb. 22 to 24.

The musical, which features the Academy Award winning song “You’ll Be in My Heart,” as well as “Son of Man” and “Two Worlds,” will be performed at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

The play, based on Disney’s animated musical and Edgar Rice Burrough’s book, the play tells the story of an infant boy who is taken in by a gorilla named Kala, played by Regan Surges, after his ship crashes on the shores of West Africa.

Kala names the boy Tarzan and raises him as her own.

Tarzan, who is played by Gavin Muller as a youth and Alex Orten as an adult, strives for acceptance from his ape father, Kerchak, portrayed by Jack Wagner, throughout childhood. When a human expedition treks into his tribe’s territory, he then encounters Jane, played by Celeste Hermans, a human like himself.

Tarzan struggles to navigate the jungle, with the support of his friend Terk, portrayed by Laura Cashin as a youth and Jack Williams as an adult, as he finds his animal upbringing clashing with his human instincts.

The show features Tylar Schaefer and Allison Juarez as Tarzan’s parents, Tyler Grant as Professor Porter, Noah Reinders as the leopard, Ryan Gallaway as Clayton and Alex Poull as Snipes.

Ensemble cast members include Adonijah Bellinger, Jasmine Cannon, Giannina Castillo Pacheco, Alexandra Deida, Kalyn Diercks, Abby Fritsch, Ellie Gephart, Shannon Knowski, Miranda Larsson, Caitlin Luib, Ryan Luib, Emily Mitchell, Molly Pashak, Chloe Peer, Anna Poull, Jennifer Poull, Katelyn Poull, Anya Robertson, Abby Rowley, Summer Samens, Andrew Schmitz, Megan Schnell, Macy Smith, Dana Tremelling and Teagan Walters.

The orchestra members, conducted by Chris Clouthier, include Mary Van Pietersom, Jessica Boccio, Emma Bollech, Wylan Boyle, Reece Crandall, Joe D’Acquisto, Rebecca Dowe, Caroline Hadacek, Nick Hadacek, Allison Hansen, Mahala Heniadas, Alex Kamenick, Abby Linstroth, Amelia McLarty, Jackson Myers, Shyla Richardson, Lucas Rohrbeck, Madeline Scheid, Bethany Stacey, Connor Tremelling, Mac Adkins, Oliver Juarez and Jennifer Ziegler.

Diana Neumeyer is directing the show. Mary Van Pietersom is vocal director and choreography is by Laura Cashin and Brianna Dawson. Megan Schnell is a featured dancer.

Ron Binns is the light and sound designer with the assistance of Zack Gephart, Darian Drewitz, Tanner Neahouse and Katie Wagner. The set construction crew, led by Stage Manager Lindzy Willborn, includes Matt O’Donnell, Claire Ball and cast members. Flight personnel are Lindzy Willborn, Ray Polgar and Rick Reinders.

Tickets, which are $9 in advance and $10 at the door, are available at Port Washington High School and Drew’s True Value. Student, children and senior tickets are $7.
