Candles flickered in the hands of people of all ages who gathered in Port Washington’s Upper Lake Park Monday to remember Tyler Buczek, the 15-year-old boy who drowned in Lake Michigan after being swept off a sandbar at the city’s north beach a year ago to the day on Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012. Tyler, a standout student and gifted athlete who died just two days before he was to start his freshman year at Port Washington High School, had been at the beach with friends enjoying one of the last days of summer vacation. Monday’s vigil was reminiscent of the one held the day after he drowned when hundreds of people joined Tyler’s family in the park in a remarkable display of community mourning and support. Tyler’s friends marked the anniversary by releasing 50 paper sky lanterns in his memory from the north beach Sunday (below).
