Belgium resident upholds Krauska tradition of earning Boy Scoutsâ highest award
When Village of Belgium resident Brandon Krauska achieved the prestigious Eagle Scout rank, he not only joined an elite group of Boy Scouts, he also entered a special family club.
In addition to Brandon, his father Paul Krauska and his three uncles Ââ Greg, Bernard and Alex â are all Eagle Scouts.
Brandon, 20, received the support of his entire family during a medal presentation at the Belgium House restaurant on Sunday.
But it was especially touching for Brandon, he said, to have his uncles from Waukesha, Minnesota and Pennsylvania at the event.
âI was really surprised my uncle from Pennsylvania drove for 10 straight hours to be there,â said Brandon.
Brandon completed the ambitious task of constructing an informational kiosk at the Cedarburg Bog State Natural Area for his Eagle Scout project.
âWhat was astonishing about this project, was not only the cost, but several other Scouts attempted to take on the project and gave up,â Paul Krauska said.
Since the kiosk was built on the Department of Natural Resources property, construction plans had to follow specific requirements, Krauska said.
Brandon received a donation of $6,841 worth of lumber, nails, concrete and other materials from Home Depot for the project.
Brandon said he constructed the structure on his familyâs property, then disassembled it in sections to transport it to the Bog.
It took Brandon and a group of volunteers eight weekends to pour a concrete base and build the kiosk on-site.
âI think once we had everyone out there it was quite easy. The planning and the building Ââ Iâm not sure which was harder,â Brandon said. âIâm not used to being a leader and I have respect for those who lead big projects and how much work they have to do.â
After Brandon received his medal, he presented his parents Paul and Pam with Eagle Scout pins.
Brandon gave a third pin to his grandfather Richard Geiser of Belgium.
âI gave the mentor pin to someone who I thought was inspirational in getting me to the Eagle rank,â Brandon said, who noted his grandfather helped him each weekend with the build.
âIâm proud and excited that I am an Eagle and I finished something big,â Brandon said.
Brandon, a freshman at Lakeland College in Sheboygan, is studying business management with a minor in aviation.
